Ben Goldscheider

In 2020, Ben makes his debut at the Mozartwoche Festival in Salzburg, with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and his recital debut at the Pierre Boulez Saal, Berlin.

At the age of 18 Ben was a Concerto Finalist in the BBC Young Musician Competition, where he  performed with the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican.

Highlights since then include his debut at the BBC Proms in 2018 (commissioning a new work by David Bruce for four soloists and orchestra), appearances as soloist with the Lucerne Symphony, Britten Sinfonia, BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC Concert Orchestra, Aurora Orchestra, English Chamber Orchestra, City of London Sinfonia, Manchester Camerata, the Prague Philharmonia and Sinfonie Orchester Berlin at the Berlin Philharmonie. Ben has worked as a soloist with conductors such as Sir Mark Elder, James Gaffigan, Nicholas Collon, Mark Wigglesworth, Kristiina Poska,  Radek Baborak , Andrew Gourlay and Jessica Cottis.

In 2018 his debut album was released to critical acclaim, and he was selected as a BBC Music Magazine Rising Star and Gramophone Magazine One to Watch. Other notable releases include the world premiere recording of Erika Fox’s “Quasi Una Cadenza” for NMC records and the solo horn call from Wagner’s Siegfried with the Halle Orchestra. He was selected for representation by Young Classical Artists Trust (YCAT) in 2019.

Ben Goldscheider’s horn-playing alone is a joy, particularly in the theatrical, improvisatory gestures of Quasi Una Cadenza.

BBC Music Magazine, August 2019

“In the hands of 18 year old Ben Goldscheider, [Esa-Pekka Salonen’s] Horn Etude is an exhilarating thrill ride; Goldscheider becoming a musical Bear Grylls, fearlessly leaping through its dangerous terrain. You find yourself with him every step of the way.”

– James Murphy, Huffington Post, May 2016

A committed chamber musician, Ben has performed at the Verbier Festival, Festival Barenboim in Buenos Aires, the Salzburg Festival, Jerusalem International Chamber Music Festival, the Intonations Festival in Berlin and at the Wigmore Hall, London. Recent chamber music partners have included Daniel Barenboim, Martha Argerich, Sergei Babayan, Elena Bashkirova, Sunwook Kim, Clara Jumi-Kang and Michael Volle.

This season Ben makes his debut with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, London Mozart Players and the Mozarteum Orchestra in the Mozartwoche Festival (Salzburg).  He returns to give a solo recital at the Pierre Boulez Saal as well as an all Ligeti concert under Francois Xavier-Roth and takes part in the Vinterfest in Sweden.  He continues to give recitals throughout the UK.

In February 2018, Ben formed a horn trio with pianist Richard Uttley and violinist Callum Smart. As keen advocates of new music and of developing the genres repertoire, their launch concert at the Conway Hall saw the world premiere of Geoffrey Gordon’s THORN which was written for them.

In demand as guest principal Ben has appeared with the Staatskapelle Berlin, West-Eastern Divan, English Chamber and Philharmonia Orchestras.

Born in 1997 in London, Ben is currently studying at the Barenboim-Said Academy in Berlin with Radek Baborák (ex-principal Berlin Philharmonic). Prior to this he attended the Royal College of Music Junior Department with Susan Dent.

Ben is a patron for the charity Music4People and has given masterclasses at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Ben is grateful for awards from the Dorothy Croft Trust for Young Musicians, Awards for Young Musicians, June Emerson Wind Music and the EMI Music Sound Foundation.

Ben Goldscheider is YCAT’s inaugural Ann Driver Trust Artist.

The Debut recording

“Debut”-Released worldwide on the 2nd February 2018

In February 2018, BBC Young Musician Grand Finalist Ben Goldscheider released his first recording on Willowhayne Records. Aptly entitled Debut, the album takes listeners on a journey through the musical development of the horn through a selection of pieces from the classical, romantic, early and late twentieth century and the 21st century. Available on Apple Music, Amazon and Spotify among other streaming services.

To put it mildly, this is a heck of a debut recital. Young Goldscheider shows off almost everything he can do, and he can do an awful lot.

The emergence of Hertfordshire-born horn virtuoso Ben Goldscheider is therefore all the more exciting. A musician whose credentials belie his youth, Goldscheider proclaims with this impressively-engineered, absorbing Willowhayne Records release that he is poised to honor Brain’s legacy with his own once-in-a-generation artistry.

Joseph Newsome

“Goldscheider…produced a lordly swooning tone in a sinuous work of immense difficulty.”
